Hello, my name is Mariana Ocaña daughter of the late Mexican pilot whose real story in 1983, inspired the film of The Runway. The emergency landing in the racecourse in Mallow, Co. Cork in Ireland was definitely the most shocking experience in my dads thirty year career, but at the same time, it was the most amazing experience.
The whole town welcomed him in such a warm way that he could never forget his Irish friends. He was treated as a folk hero, the whole town was involved with the event and the building of the runway, and when it was finally ready, thousands of people went to say good/bye in that unforgettable take/off.
There are so many memories of that time. I had the honor to vist Mallow last july, and it is incredible how people in town still remember him and the 40 days he stayed there.
My father knew about the shooting of The Runway, just a few months before he passed away, and he was delighted to know that people in Ireland still remembered him and this wonderful experience. He wished strongly to see the film when it was finished, unfortunately, he passed away in 2009.

As the daughter of the Mexican pilot whose real story, occured in 1983, inspired this film, I want to thank all the Irish people, especially the people of Mallow, co. Cork for their friendly welcome, the support and help towards my father at the time.
We will never forget his incredible experience….thanks Mallow, in the name of my dad, Captain Ruben Ocana. He was always grateful for the way people in Ireland received him.
