USS New York Made From WTC Steel To ‘Never Forget’

Like a phoenix from the ashes, the World Trade Center is reborn in the form of a US Navy frigate called the USS New York. As the ship rolls into New York Harbor this morning, Captain William Herman leads a young crew to “Never Forget.”

7.5 tons of steel from the remnants of the World Trade Center make up the stem of the USS New York. All of this to live up to the ship’s motto: “Strength forged through sacrifice, never forget.” The strength of every ship is the stem, so having the WTC steel as a part of the ship’s strongest point also points to the sacrifice made on 9/11.

Part of Captain William Herman’s job on the ship is also make sure the crew never forgets. Many of the youngest crew members were 8,9 and 10 years old on 9/11, and Captain Herman wants them to feel tied to those events 10 years ago.

As they sailed from Norfolk, VA into New York Harbor, the crew of the USS New York rendered honors as they passed by the site of the World Trade Center.  The ship will feature as a backdrop in the ceremonies on Sunday morning in Lower Manhattan.

Upon learning of his assignment to lead the USS New York, Capt. Herman says it was very surreal. His family has several ties to New York and 9/11; his uncle is retired FDNY and his wife is from Long Island.  It’s a dream come true for him and his family, and he wants the ship’s crew to feel that as well.
