It’s 11/11/11! In honor of this rare numerical occurance on the calendar, have a look at these 11 interesting facts about the number 11!
1. “These go up to 11.”
In the movie This Is Spinal Tap, the character Nigel Tuffnel (played by Christopher Guest) talks about his guitar amps that have an 11th volume setting. What has become possibly the most quoted bit from the film, in 2002, the phrase was added to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary with the definition “up to maximum volume.” Fans of Spinal Tap are celebrating today as Spinal Tap Day or Nigel Tuffnel Day, so this would be a great movie to watch today.
2. 11 Players On The Field
In American football, soccer, and cricket, there are 11 players on the field for a team during play at one time.

4. Apollo 11
Apollo 11 was the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon. Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first humans to walk on the moon on July 20th, 1969.
11 is the atomic number of sodium. Sodium is the chemical found in salt.
6. Veterans Day
World War I ended with an agreement, called an armistice, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year. November 11th became known as Armistice Day to honor the men who served in WWI. While it is still celebrated, the date is more commonly known in the United States as Veterans Day to honor all American Veterans. In Europe, today is Remembrance Day.

On this day, 100 years ago, the Great Blue Norther of 11/11/11 swept across the central United States. It was a cold snap that caught much of the country off guard with sudden, extreme drops in temperature. Many cities saw record highs early in the day, only to find the temperature dropping to record lows hours later. Winds kicked up dust storms in Oklahoma and nine tornados in 4 states. An F4 twister struck a town in Wisconsin, and survivors found themselves in the midst of a blizzard not an hour later.
