PETA Wants Turkey, TX To Change Its Name To ‘Tofurkey’

PETA is known for making a statement about the treatment of animals, and this time, they’ve set their sights on the small Panhandle town of Turkey, TX (Pop. 494). People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Mayor Pat Carson requesting the name of Turkey, TX be changed to ‘Tofurkey” for Thanksgiving.

PETA is offering the entire town a vegan Thanksgiving feast in exchange for the name change. This is in an effort to raise awareness about the cruelty suffered by turkeys. “Thanksgiving is murder on turkeys,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman.

Mayor Pat Carson isn’t very amused, and neither is the town of Turkey. The small agricultural town, ironically, is more known for it’s beef cattle than the popular Thanksgiving bird.

“If we’re going to promote anything it would be ‘Save Turkey, eat more beef,” says Mayor Carson.

PETA has posted the letter they sent to Turkey on their website, have a look.

I tuned into Lite FM this morning hoping to hear some Christmas music and get into the holiday spirit but instead I heard this segment and was perplexed as to why Gene and Julie chose to turn a seemingly light-hearted PETA stunt into mean-spirited name calling. I am not a vegetarian and don’t have feelings either way about the issue but Gene and (in particular) Julie’s treatment of the topic seemed unnecessarily rude. If Lite FM intends to be the place to find holiday cheer, perhaps Gene and Julie could use a dose of kindness. I think I will find my Christmas music elsewhere this holiday season!
