18 Year Old Mother Kills Intruder While Protecting Her Infant Son

A teenage mother shot and killed an intruder after a 911 operator told her she was legally allowed to “do what she had to do” to protect her and her infant son with force.

Sarah McKinley, 18, killed Justin Martin on New Years Eve in Blanchard, Oklahoma when he and an accomplice forced their way into her home. Martin was trying to get to her bearing a long hunting knife when he was shot dead by McKinley.

The fatal encounter happened about a week after Sarah’s husband died of cancer, according to TV station KOCO. On the day of her husband’s funeral, the intruder visited her door claiming he was a neighbor that wanted to say hello. Luckily she didn’t open the door that day.

He returned days later on December 31st with his accomplice and they tried to force their way into her home. When she heard them trying to break in, she called 911.

The emergency call went on for 21 minutes. “I’ve got two guns in my hand — Is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?” McKinley asked the 911 operator.

“I can’t tell you that you can do that, but you do what you have to do to protect your baby,” the operator responded the second time she was asked.

Eventually they kicked in the door and Martin charged at her with a knife. Luckily McKinley fired on him before he could injure her.

His alleged accomplice, Dustin Stewart, fled when he heard the gunshot and later surrendered to police, according to The Oklahoman. He was charged with burglary.
