Yesterday we brought you the 5 reasons The Hunger Games will not be bigger than Harry Potter. Today we thought we would bring you the counter to that argument.
So here are 5 reasons The Hunger Games will be bigger than Harry Potter.
5. Irresistible Hook
Much like the Harry Potter books, each of the three Hunger Games books unfolds over the course of a year’s time. While the Games play a part in each of the books, the tone and events of them are very different, tracking an expansive story arc that goes from oppression to rebellion and finally to war. Many non-readers complained the first Harry Potter was slow moving, and took too long to capture the audience. That will not be the case with the Hunger Games. It’s not just a great plot, it’s a great mythology. With a little bit of great storytelling.
4. Fully-Realized and Realistic World
The evil-Capitol, and the lifestyles of the people in the twelve districts creates a fully-realized world that will captivate the audience. Although the life in the Capitol is luxurious and filled with absurdities, at no point can you claim that it is impossible. Harry Potter is based in fantasy, turning some non fantasy fans away, and although The Hunger Games is improbable it still has a strong foundation in reality.
3. Confident Storytelling
Collins manages to tell a story that’s as captivating as it is appalling, . She never goes for the obvious, the easy stuff; she goes for the most gut-wrenching developments every time. The story telling if one of the biggest differences between Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Harry Potter is meant for kids, therefore everything is either good or evil, black and white. There is very little middle ground in the Potter films. The Hunger Games deals with much more adult content. The characters and situations are harder to comprehend, but it’s complexity of the characters make them more real. Every hero has weaknesses, even the worst person can do some good. The Hunger Games deals with shades of gray that draw the audience into the story, and make them beg for more.
2. President Snow
Every great hero needs a villain, and The Hunger Games delivers. Sure Harry Potter has Voldemort, but he is trying to ruin the establishment. Harry is fighting to keep the status quo. President Snow is the establishment. Snow is focused, power-hungry, and absolutely amoral. he has no redeeming virtues and if he has some traumatic childhood back story, we’re never see it. He has a cunning, ruthless mind and he’ll do anything it takes to ensure that he remains president of Panem. Katniss is fighting to change her world for the better. He represents everything that is corrupt and wrong with not only Panem, but with our society.
1. Katniss Everdeen
Harry Potter, “the boy who lived.” Katniss Everdeen, “the girl on fire.” Almost sounds like they’re made for each other. Katniss is a true original, an unwilling hero who’s very existence is defined by her hardcore survivalist nature. Where so many other protagonists spend most of their time obsessing over their conflicted emotions (Twilight comes to mind) or the boy they want-but-can’t-have (Harry and his parents), Katniss is concerned only with whatever she needs in order to survive.
Unlike Harry, Katniss is reactive. She isn’t really sure how she feels about those in power, or those fighting it. Katniss is looking to survive and provide a better life for her and her family. The citizens of Panem are drawn to her raw talent as a survivalist. She is guarded and closed off, but as the story unfolds you find she is also selfless, honorable, and thoroughly moral. She’s not just a character that viewers can root for, but a character that they can relate too.
