Lite’s Review Room: Men In Black III

The MIB is back! No new song for this one from Will Smith, but 10 years after the latest and 15 years after the original the Men In Black are back.

Our Queen of the Silver Screen and member of the DFW Film Critics Association, Julie Fisk, dons her Ray-Bans and took in the latest MIB flick.

Men In Black III

“Men in Black 3” once again stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as Agents J & K, who defend the planet from an alien invasion. It’s been 10 years since “Men in Black 2” and a full 15 years since the first movie, which is strange because Will Smith has barely aged a day.

I don’t know if it’s the Scientology or if he’s an alien himself, but it’s almost unsettling how little he’s changed. Tommy Lee Jones has more city miles on him, as Will Smith says, but it appears along the way he’s lost interest in these films.

His Agent K is supposed to be experiencing some form of sadness or fear, but Jones only gives us a blank stare. He’s certainly capable of portraying these emotions, as we saw in “No Country for Old Men” but there’s nothing of that actor here. Thank goodness for Josh Brolin, who plays the younger version of Agent K.

Brolin still gives us that Texas stoicism but with a wink & the humor we USED to see in Jones. “Men in Black 3” feels thrown together and there are glaring inconsistencies, like a scene where aliens launch an airborne attack but Will Smith never once looks up to the sky. It offers some old-fashioned alien fun and a genuinely interesting twist, but I’m afraid I can only give it “Men in Black 3” a C.

If you’re keeping score, you’ll know this is my 3rd C rating in a row. That’s 3 consecutive blockbusters that didn’t meet expectations and I’m starting to worry about the rest of our Summer movies. With biggies like “Prometheus” and “The Amazing Spiderman” on the horizon, I hope this trend turns around soon or we won’t have a good excuse to get out of the heat this summer & into those wonderful air-conditioned theaters.
