If there is one thing summer in Texas demands, it’s the electricity to run the A/Cs that keep us cool. Last year, a record was set for demand on the power grid in August, and ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) says we could break that this week if we’re not careful. ERCOT is asking for your help to ease the demand for power that is causing a strain on our resources.

The demand is at its greatest between 3PM and 7PM in the afternoon. Here is some “Powerful Advice” to help conserve power during that time:

  • Delay power-consuming chores, such as laundry and running the dishwasher, until later in the evening. Avoid using hair dryers during peak power usage hours.
  • Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances, and electronics. Unplug electronics that you aren’t using as some electronics still draw power even when they aren’t on.
  • When you’re at home, close blinds and drapes to windows that get direct sun, set the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, and  turn on a fan to make rooms in use feel cooler.
  • When you leave home, keep the blinds and drapes closed, turn off all the fans, and set the thermostat to 85 degrees or higher only if you don’t have pets in the house.
  • Try not to open refrigerators and freezers too much so they stay cool.
  • Cook with the microwave instead of an electric stove or oven.
  • If you have a swimming pool, set the pump to come on in the morning or late evening.

By following these tips, we can help reduce the strain on our power resources. Not only that, following these tips all summer long could help cut down on your electric bill.
