North Texas gained a new Olympic gold medalist over the weekend. Granbury’s own Olympic swimmer Dana Vollmer took the gold in the 100-meter butterfly on Sunday. She also broke a world record.

She was in third place at the half-way point but zoomed ahead in the final stretch to finish with a time of 55.98. The previous record was 56.06; it was set by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom who was wearing a now-banned high-tech bodysuit during the 2009 world championships. Vollmer is the second Olympic swimmer to set new world records at the London Games.

“I’m on top of the world right now.” she said. “I still know I can go faster.”

Despite being behind in the first 50-meters, the gold medalist says that knowing her strength lies in her “second 50” is what kept her calm.

Vollmer beat China’s Lu Ying and Australia’s Alicia Coutts who took silver and gold respectively.
