Last night, planes canvased parts of Dallas County east of the Tollway, spraying insecticide meant to eradicate mosquitos and stop the spread of the West Nile Virus.

If you live in the areas sprayed last night, there are a few things you should do this morning. For one, wash out pet food and water dishes left outside. Wash any vegetables and fruit growing in your outdoor garden before cooking or eating them.

Tonight, areas west of the Tollway will be covered by the aerial spraying. This includes Grand Prairie, Coppell, and Farmers Branch. The city of Irving refused aerial spraying. Planes will begin spraying for mosquitos between 10PM and 1AM. You’ll want to stay indoors during the spraying and bring any pets inside. Cover up decorative fish ponds as the fish could become sick from the chemicals seeping into the water.¬†Officials recommend being careful with what you touch when outdoors. Don’t wear the same shoes that you wear outdoors for a couple of days.

You can help prevent the spread of West Nile and slow the presence of mosquitos in your area by making sure there is no standing water in your area. Empty out bird baths, trays under potted plants, and cover up outdoor trash cans to keep from collecting water. Report swimming pools that have gone green; in Dallas, call 311.
