Celeste & Jesse Forever

There are a couple of interesting new movies out this weekend so let’s start with “Celeste & Jesse Forever,” starring Rashida Jones & Andy Samberg as a divorced couple who can’t seem to split up. Celeste & Jesse have been a couple since high school and thanks to real chemistry between Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg, they seem made for each other. That’s why their divorce is so hard to swallow, especially when half of the couple doesn’t even WANT to be divorced.

It’s great to see Andy Samberg play a serious role, or at least sort of serious, and the polished Rashida Jones makes Celeste’s descent into crazy-sweater-lady-depression especially fun. I never understood their break-up and I really struggled with the ending but I still enjoyed “Celeste & Jesse Forever” enough to give it a B+.

Also out is “Sparkle,” starring Jordin Sparks as a girl who forms a Motown group with her sisters and Whitney Houston as the Mother who plans to stop them. This story has been told over and over again and it was way better in 2006 when they called it “Dreamgirls.” Jordin Sparks is a lovely talent but people will see this movie primarily because its Whitney Houston’s last. She isn’t used enough and her character is never fully realized, but Whitney owns every shot she’s in.

She sings with a choir at one point and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I had to use my sleeve as a hanky. I can’t give “Sparkle” anything higher than a C- primarily for being lazy with the performances. The music didn’t match up with the lip-synching in several instances. Whitney Houston fans should definitely catch “Sparkle” though, if only to see her shine one last time.
