There has been talk of getting rid of the penny in the United States. Just rounding total amounts up or down depending on where the closest nickel fell. Well the popular restaurant Chipotle has decided to already start doing that before the penny has been eradicated.

A few New Jersey Chipotle customers were confused when they noticed their bill had been rounded up to the nearest even amount. This is apparently a practice that Chipotle uses in its busiest markets (i.e. New York & New Jersey) to help keep the queue from backing up too much. The registers do the math automatically rounding both up or down to the nearest nickel.

Huffington Post is reporting that a Chipotle spokesperson says the idea to increase efficiency in the high volume stores, “The idea is simply to limit the possible combinations of change on cash transactions to keep the lines moving quickly in high volume areas,” spokesman Chris Arnold tells the newspaper. “It was never our intention to have a policy that was confusing or misleading,” he told

The spokesman also says that the restaurant chain has seen no profit from the practice.

There has been ideas put out there about just getting rid of the penny all together. It might cost you a few cents here or there, but it might save a whole lot of money and hassle as well.
