The 2012 State Fair of Texas drew to a close Sunday. Many fairgoers turned out over the weekend to pay respects to the beloved fallen mascot, Big Tex.

Memorials began building around the circle where Big Tex has stood for 60 years. Sue Gooding, spokeswoman for the State Fair, says that the fire that claimed Big Tex is believed to have begun at a power source near his feet and the structure acted as a chimney, but officials have yet to make a final conclusion.

Despite the heartache of Big Tex’s loss, 2012’s State Fair is shaping up to be one of the best years ever for the Fair. 2010 is officially in the biggest year on the books, but officials won’t know for certain until later today.
