Maddie doesn’t just take her issues with Crohn’s disease on head on, she overcomes them and helps others. Hear Maddie’s story of Hope:

When Maddie was first diagnosed with Crohn’s disease (3 years in Sept. 2012) she was being seen by a physician at Medical City. The medication she was prescribed helped for a while, but a year into the treatment she developed eczema and psoriasis. It was so bad that she was confined to a wheelchair and underwent phototherapy three times a week.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic illness that causes irritation in the digestive tract. It occurs most commonly in the ileum (lower small intestine) or in the colon (large intestine), but can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract. It is a form of inflammatory bowel disease.

They decided to bring Maddie to Children’s where they met Dr. Ashish Patel. He determined that the medication she was taking caused the eczema and psoriasis. “We couldn’t be happier with him and everything Children’s has done for our family,” said her mom, Kristie. “We jokingly call the hospital “the spa” because of the great treatment she receives while she’s there.”

This past school year, Maddie spent 32 days at Children’s. Most of her hospital stays are about 5 days. She was here for two weeks before Christmas and was discharged Christmas day.

She will be the freshman mascot (yellowjacket) for Rockwall High School. She was in the hospital for a blood transfusion in Feb. and then tried out for the mascot position two weeks later.

Maddie regularly participates in the Inflammatory Bowel Disease support group. Support groups give patients with the same medical issues the opportunity to share coping techniques and experiences, and build relationships with their peers.
