It’s a little old and a little new. The annual marathon in Dallas has seen a lot of changes this year. A new name and a new route are just a few of the new things about the MetroPCS Dallas Marathon.

The most notable change is the new name. It’s long been known at the White Rock Marathon, and “running the Rock” has been an annual tradition for many. The marathon has grown considerably over the past 42 years, and in an effort to make the marathon more easily identifiable internationally, organizers partnered with the City of Dallas to change the name from the White Rock Marathon to the Dallas Marathon. The marathon has attracted participants from 23 countries around the globe, and the hope is that the Dallas Marathon will grow to attract even more international runners.

The course has also had a makeover. The new course mixes old and new, but the start and finish will be in downtown Dallas. The new course will run along the new Klyde Warren deck park, across the new Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, wind through Uptown, around White Rock Lake as it traditionally has, then back down Swiss Avenue, and come through Deep Ellum to finish in downtown. The course will definitely show off some of the best new and old views of Dallas.

The MetroPCS Dallas Marathon kicks off at 8AM this Sunday morning, December 9th, in downtown Dallas. There is an expected 25,000 runners participating this year, and organizers expect there to be 250,000 spectators lining the course. The first runners in the half-marathon should cross the finish line around noon, and the full marathon runners should cross around 3PM.
