Playing For Keeps
Playing For Keeps
Film District And Chrysler With The Cinema Society Premiere Of "Playing For Keeps" - Arrivals
“Playing for Keeps” stars Gerard Butler as a former world-class soccer star who tries to reconnect with his estranged wife and son.
Every year around this time, studios release a little bit of fluff to counteract the hefty Oscar caliber films that clog theaters. Maybe they think that people get tired of watching actual GOOD movies so they put out something like “New Year’s Eve” last year or “The Tourist” the year before that.
This time around we get the star-studded “Playing for Keeps,” featuring Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid. An almost unrecognizable Uma Thurman shows up and essentially collects a paycheck, but not even a big-name roster like this can save “Playing for Keeps.” It’s too bad because Gerard Butler is an effortless actor and watching him play soccer is a genuine treat. This could’ve been a great vehicle for him, but everyone around him falls flat. Jessica Biel brings nothing to the table but a pretty face and Dennis Quaid is just gross as a mysteriously wealthy friend.
Catherine Zeta-Jones does her best but she’s forced to play one of the many sex-crazed women who populate this community. They immediately start stalking Butler’s soccer coach like hungry, well-dressed badgers and I get it! He’s adorable with that accent & those shorts but COME ON! As a Soccer Mom myself, I have to admit being a little offended by the stereotype. I guess it’s more fun than the reality but it’s one of the many reasons I have to give “Playing for Keeps” an F.
Sorry, but I guess you’ll just have to go see a GOOD movie instead.
