2012 wil be remembered for many things, but it could be remembered as the year that the word “viral” went… well… viral.
Viral videos reached a whole new level this year as they became newsmakers in their own right. A viral video could go from nothing to national, and sometimes international, news in just days after being posted. A video forwarded to you by a friend in the morning could be seen on the national news by the end of the day.
Viral sensations also proved to be career makers for a few people. If it hadn’t been for their viral videos, we wouldn’t know Psy, Carly Rae Jepsen, or Felix Baumgartner.
Let’s take a look back at our 10 favorite viral videos of the year:
10.) Baby Red Panda’s Big Surprise – This baby red panda’s genuine and genuinely adorable look of astonishment might just be the cutest animal moment of the year.
9.) San Diego 4th Of July Fireworks Fail (or Gone In 30 Seconds) – It was the biggest and quickest fireworks show in history, all by mistake, and all caught on tape.
8.) Mister Rogers Remixed – PBS Digital Studios took some PBS classics and gave them the auto-tune treatment. Julia Child, Reading Rainbow, and that Happy Trees guy also got an auto-tune remix, but it was Mister Rogers that started it all.
7.) 2-year-old Girl Sings Adele – Adorable Makena serenades her way into our hearts singing Adele’s “Someone Like You”
6.) Twin Babies Rock Out To Dad’s Guitar – What’s cuter than a baby silly dancing to a dad’s guitar? How about twin babies silly dancing in sync to their dad’s guitar jamming?
5.) Harvard Men’s Baseball Team Performs “Call Me Maybe” – Nothing livens up a boring road trip like choreographing a fun dance to Carly Rae Jepsen. This video also inspired the SMU Women’s Rowing team to create a video of their own!
4.) Felix Baumgartner Leaps Into History From The Edge Of Space – The world collectively watched, gasped, and sat in awe as this brave man ascended to the greatest heights and stepped into history. Baumgartner not only broke records that day, he also broke the sound barrier… twice… with his own body.
3.) Brazilian Elevator Ghost Prank – An elaborate prank for a Brazilian variety program had us howling with laughter at people being so easily scarred by a little girl dressed as a ghost.
2. ) Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” – The Canadian Idol songstress hit international stardom when parodies of her song went viral and took her music video to viral heights along with.
1.) Psy’s “Gangnam Style” – No one is quite sure where or how “Gangnam Style” came from, but in the bat of an eyelash, it was everywhere and inescapable. Soon enough, Psy had everyone ponying-up to do his catchy dance. The video for “Gangnam Style” hit the 1 billion views mark on Friday, December 21st.
