Experts say that this year will be the worst flu season in a while. If there was any time to get the flu shot, it’s now.

No flu season has started so early and hard in nearly a decade. WebMD says that 20% of the entire population will get the flu in a season. If you get the flu vaccine now, your body will take around 2 weeks to develop the anti-bodies against the flu. While modern medicine keeps us from historic outbreaks like the Spanish Influenza in 1918, between 3,000-49,000 people still die each year from the flu. The flu virus can travel airborne up to 20 feet with just 1 sneeze.

Dr. Lawrence Hum of Texas Health Presbytertian Hospital in Plano says that the risk you take by not getting the flu shot is much greater than any side effects you’d experience if you did. By avoiding the flu shot, you risk not only getting slammed with the full force of the worst of the symptoms of the flu, being sick for longer, and spreading the virus to loved ones, but you also risk the secondary bacterial infection that is much more dangerous. The secondary bacterial infection is what took the life of Flower Mound teen Max Schwolert.

There are a few myths associated with the flu vaccine. You can’t get the full-blown flu from the vaccine though you may experience a few slight symptoms. The flu vaccine doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get sick and you still may be vunerable to other viruses and illnesses going around, like colds and stomach bugs.

Dallas County is offering free flu shots for residents, but they are in high demand and short supply. Call your doctor’s office or your local Walgreens, CVS, or grocery store to make sure they have the flu shot in stock
