We love celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Whether it’s in recognition of the Mexican heritage of family and friends, maybe it’s just an excuse to spend the day loading up on enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, and margaritas. It’s the margaritas yesterday that will make this Monday morning very interesting.

Let’s look at margaritas and tequila by the numbers from

  • Americans bought 12.3m cases of tequila last year alone.
  • Margaritas accounted for 23% of all cocktails sold in 2012 in bars and restaurants in the United States, but on Cinco de Mayo, 47% cocktails sold are margaritas.
  • The US consumes twice as much as tequila as the country where tequila originates, Mexico.

Americans love tequila, but there’s something about it that gets us in a heap of trouble. Even one drink is enough to cause some mischief that has us scratching our heads the next morning.┬áJulie won’t go into detail, but she says that she was once booted from a backstage after-party at a Van Halen concert.┬áTony’s friend called last night to say he’d like to come visit, and this morning he found that instead of one round-trip ticket, he’d booked two one-way non-refundable tickets.

Tony shared a doozy of a story this morning. Listen!
