Their script for The Way Way Back actually was written 8 years ago, long before they worked with writer/director Alexander Payne on The Descendants. It was that script which sort of landed them the job that would earn them an Oscar for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay.
One their most memorable moments was striking Angelina Jolie’s infamous leg pose as they accepted their Oscars. They knew that they were going to let Alexander Payne give the acceptance speech, but Jim wanted to own the moment as he didn’t know if he’d ever be on that stage again. So he struck the pose, and Nat tried his best to play along.
The Way Way Back is about a boy who is bullied by his mother’s boyfriend and by life in general in a way. Steve Carrel plays the mom’s boyfriend who asks the boy in the first scene how would he rate himself on a scale of 1 to 10, an event that was inspired by something that actually happened in Jim’s life.
