Julie’s Review Room: 4th Of July 3-Pack

Despicable Me

It’s a holiday week and we’ve got a 3-pack of big movies opening so first let’s take a look at “Despicable Me” Part 2. This sequel is not as clever as the first “Despicable Me,” and it could be accused of pandering to kids, since the Minions take the spotlight. Gru has been reduced to a lonely guy looking for love, but it opens the door for Kristen Wiig’s fun new character, Lucy. Smaller kids will hate seeing the Minions be mistreated but overall, it’s silly fun so I’m giving “Despicable Me 2” a B.

The Lone Ranger

Also out is Armie Hammer and a war-painted Johnny Depp in “The Long Ranger.” The first thing you should know about this movie is that it’s 2 and a half hours long. Also, I’m not sure who they’re targeting because it’s too brutal for kids but also too goofy for grown-ups. Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp have such great chemistry that they ALMOST save this movie, but not quite so I’m giving “The Lone Ranger” a C minus.

The Way, Way Back

And finally we have yet another solid flick starring Steve Carrel called “The Way, Way Back.” This movie follows the almost unbearable discomfort of teenaged Duncan, who is forced to go on a beach trip with his Mom & her new boyfriend. It starts off grim and gets even grimmer before life turns around for Duncan, thanks to his friendship with the owner of a water park, played by a fantastic Sam Rockwell. It feels a little forced at times but this movie is so uplifting and you can’t help but cheer Duncan on and that’s why I’m giving “The Way, Way Back” an A minus.
