They say if you’re attacked by a shark, to punch it in the nose. A Canadian man may have found a way to get a bear to stop attacking him: by grabbing its tongue.

O reports that Gilles Cyr was out on his woodlot in Grands Falls when a black bear attacked him. Adrenaline and instinct took over as Cyr wrestled the bear, and he grabbed on to the bear’s tongue.

“When I opened up my eyes it was on top of me – with the friggin’ noise, it’s crazy the way it growls. Right from the stomach. It’s not from the mouth, it’s just inside. His mouth was wide open right in front of my face so the last thing I remember I had his tongue in my hand and I didn’t want to let go because he was trying to fight me off. So he was hitting me with his claws, so I says, ‘If you’re going to hurt me, I’m going to hurt you too.’ So he was biting his tongue at the same time,” Cyr said as he described the ordeal.

Cyr managed to get away and hid behind a tree to wait as the bear lost interest and ambled away. Cyr was treated for minor injuries including scratches on his abdomen and a bite mark on his knee. He also gave permission to a warden to hunt down the animal and terminate it.
