What would you do if you suddenly discovered that there was no limit on your credit card? Some very lucky government benefit recipients in Louisiana figured out that their EBT cards had no-limit for a scant few hours over the weekend, sparking shopping sprees at area Walmarts.
CBS News reports that a power outage during routine maintenance testing at Xerox, which hosts some of the EBT card system’s infrastructure, was responsible for the temporary glitch that removed spending limits from the cards. Once the glitch was discovered, the mad dash through Walmart began.
Police were called in to keep the peace as shoppers loaded their carts sky-high. Frantic store managers were told by Walmart bosses to keep the registers ringing as shoppers attempted to use their now limit-free, government-funded EBT cards.
“We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards during the outage so that they could get food for their families,” said Walmart representative Kayla Whaling. She also said that Walmart was, “fully engaged and monitoring the situation and transactions during the outage.”
Within a few hours, the glitch was fixed and carts piled high with products were left abandoned in the aisles. The EBT card once again have fixed spending limits.
