Yesterday, Julie’s youngest daughter Lucy came out from school with a frown. Usually this means that there was trouble at school, but this time, Lucy told her mom that she’d hurt herself on the monkey bars during recess.

It seems like you can’t escape childhood with at least one story of injury. This morning, we shared our stories of getting hurt at school.

John once busted his head open on the playground swing. He had jumped out of the wooden seat and looked back to see it coming back. He made to run out of it’s way, but he slipped on the gravel. When he tried to get up again, the swing connected with the back of his head. He held a hand over where it hit and went over to his teacher. When he pulled his hand away, his teacher screamed, scooped him up, and started running towards the school office. He didn’t know why they were running until they got to the office and he could see his injury. That’s when he started screaming too.

Tony went to Catholic school through 5th grade. When he was in 2nd grade, he was in the choir and they had a performance during school Mass. He sang the first verse of the song, but during the second verse, he started to feel ill. He tried to power through, but the next thing he knew, he was waking up with his teacher and a priest standing over him making the Sign of the Cross. As it happens, he had passed out and hit his head on the stairs up to the altar. The whole Mass stopped when Tony fell.
