Santa’s Sparkle Nominee: Buffy

We have received 100s upon 100s of nominations for Santa’s Sparkle. From those nominations, we have chosen 5 families who have met with undue hardship this year to bless with an awesome Christmas at our Santa’s Sparkle event on Friday, December 20th, at the Hilton Anatole.

This morning, we heard Dana McCann’s nomination, her friend Buffy Hanson and her family. Dana writes:

On 1/24/2013, Buffy Hanson knew that her life was about to change. She had discovered a hard lump a little larger than a marble in her left breast while taking a shower. She promptly called her OB/GYN and went to the office for an evaluation where it was determined further tests were required. The next day, Buffy arrived at the hospital for a diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound, and needle biopsy. A few hours later, she heard the four words every woman fears, “You have breast cancer.” Cancer of the breast, or “boob flu” as Buffy says.

Buffy is a small business owner, single mom or 3, and warrior against breast cancer. She has endured chemotherapy, multiple surgeries including ovary removal and an emergency double mastectomy when a brutal infection was 24 hours from taking her life, as well as radiation that left her body red and raw. During all of this, she has maintained a positive attitude, a warrior-like, stance against an evil monster known as cancer.

With medical bills piling up, a small business to keep going, and 3 kids for whom to provide, Buffy and her beautiful family (Macy – 16; Mason – 9; and Maddie – 8) need all the help they can get. Unknown to the kids, this may be their last Christmas with their mom, as she was recently told her cancer is terminal. She is still fighting to be able to spend as much time as possible with her beloved children, who are the ones who have kept her going in her darkest times. Buffy has been deserted by her mom, her best friend of more than 10 years, and countless others who could not handle her disease. What is there for them to handle? The sadness, the tragedy of a 37-year-old woman discovering she has advanced-stage cancer? The treatments, the mood swings? It’s her tragedy, not theirs – and as hurt as she has been by these people, she has maintained a smile, even when her world was crashing in. Only the few people very close to her know the whole truth, as it’s just a little too much to fathom right now.

Please help this very deserving family have a memorable Christmas, just in case it’s their last. Their requests are simple: age appropriate clothing, toys, electronics, etc. A gift card to Target or another store that would allow Buffy to go shopping for the kids, since they are not having much of a Christmas this year, would be amazing. And for, Buffy, well, she simply wants time – not something anyone can give – to spend with her kids and see them happy. Making sure they have a Christmas to remember, would be the best gift she could receive.

This morning, we called Buffy to tell her that she’s been selected as one of our Santa’s Sparkle recipients! Listen here!

There is still time for you to donate to Santa’s Sparkle! We’ll be at the Hilton Anatole on Friday, December 20th to honor recipient families selected to enjoy Christmas At The Anatole and Sparkle, dine at one of the Anatole’s restaurants, receive spa treatments, and spend the night in a suite. Go to to donate and find out more information!
