We have received 100s upon 100s of nominations for Santa’s Sparkle. From those nominations, we have chosen 5 families who have met with undue hardship this year to bless with an awesome Christmas at our Santa’s Sparkle event on Friday, December 20th, at the Hilton Anatole.
This morning, we revealed our final Santa’s Sparkle family. Martin Ramon nominated Maria Marquez and her family. This is what Martin wrote:
I have known Ruben and Maria Marquez for several years. I have known Ruben for more than 20 years. We worked together at 2 separate jobs, and while not best friends, we became good friends. Ruben was the type of person that you could always count on. I asked him for help several times on fixing cars, and he always made time to help. He was very good when it came to repairing cars.
Maria came into his life after a difficult divorce. He really loved Maria, and she truly loved him. The had 3 children together, but she treated his children from his first marriage as if they were hers also.
About 3 years ago, Ruben was diagnosed with Leukemia. He decided that he was going to fight this cancer and beat it so he could see all his children grow up. He went through chemo and was eventually given a bone marrow transplant. He was beginning to recover and get healthy again; he went back to work at Southwest Airlines where he worked in the reservations department.
About 3 months ago, he was told that the cancer had come back. They told him that this was a stronger type of Leukemia and that he would not be able to beat it. He was determined to beat it. He said he wanted to do chemo again even though the doctors told him that it would probably kill him.
Ruben passed away on November 16th. He is missed so much by his wife, all his children, and all his friends. I wish I had spent more time with Ruben before he passed away. We get so busy with life that we forget the people that are important to us. Ruben loved his friends and truly loved his family. When he talked about his family, you could see the happiness in his eyes.
Please accept this family for this as they truly need a little happiness in a time of such sorrow. The world was a better place with Ruben on it, and I guess that now Heaven is a better place. God called home a truly fine man.
We gave Maria a call this morning to surprise her with a Santa’s Sparkle Christmas at the Anatole!
