Casey was a radio legend and icon that paved the way for so many of us. He was a DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Network while in the Army and continued his career after leaving. On July 4, 1970 AMERICAN TOP 40 was born. Kasem said that original show took 18 hours to produce all while only having seven affiliates.

He hosted the weekly countdown until 1988 and then again from 1998 until 2004 when Ryan Seacrest took over.

Kasey wasn’t only known for his radio and broadcasting talents and voice, he was also a very successful voice-over actor predominantly known being the voice of Shaggy on Scooby-Doo, a role he held for over 40 years.

In 1985, Kasem was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

I had the pleasure of being introduced to Casey through on of my dear friends Larry Morning while out in Los Angeles at the Radio & Records Convention. It was a quick but impactful chat that seemed surreal. He congratulated me on an award I was nominated for, reminded me to always have fun and to love the listeners and they will love you back and as he started to move from our conversation to work the room I said “Any chance, just to say I’ve heard it in person….” and before I could finish my request he smiled and in that oh so familiar voice jumped into character and belted out  “Zoinks! Scooby-Doo, Where Are You”.

He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. From the bottoms of our hearts, thanks for the memories and may you rest in peace.

Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars…
